Nico Baumgarten & Edward Johansson
Artist's Book Workshop

A 10-day photographic artists’ book workshop with the German photographer and bookbinder Nico Baumgarten and the Åland based graphic designer Edward Johansson, in collaboration with Mariehamns tryckeri Ab and Ahvaland.

The workshop is divided into two parts. The first part takes place on a remote island in Föglö, where we will focus on the editing and sequencing of each participant’s book project. During the second part of the workshop we will move into Ahvaland’s letterpress print-studio in Lemland, and continue with the practical production and finalisation of the books.

Nico Baumgarten is a German freelance photographer and bookbinder who self-publishes photo books. He has studied photography at the IDEP in Barcelona and bookbinding at the CFP Bauer in Milan. Baumgarten has taught photography and bookmaking in Berlin, Riga, Caracas, Rio De Janeiro, Istanbul, Amsterdam and Paris.

Edward Johansson is an Åland based graphic designer. After graduating from Central Saint Martin 2009 he worked for a few years in the industry, before commencing on a Masters in Design Research at Goldsmiths, University of London. He now lives on Åland, where he runs his letterpress workshop, Ahvaland.
