An Act of Finding

The workshop is an attempt to look at the texts The Essay as Form by Theodor W Adorno and Cézannes Doubt by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In two separate ways the texts unlock the concept of form. Perception, writing and making are placed in relation one another allowing the possibility for the object to have primacy over the subject. By way of looking at texts that examine art with great intensity as a starting point, our goal is to practice writing.

During the residency our days will be divided into two work shifts with a lunch break in between. Every morning after sauna and breakfast we will have a brief morning meeting before getting to work. You will receive one 30 minute writing assignment each day, as well as a week-long thought based assignment, tailored individually.

The program is dedicated to wake your mind; to tease, inspire and enhance your ability to focus during extensive time spent working on texts belonging to your own practice. One evening of the week will be reserved for presentation of your own artistic work. Another evening will be dedicated to discussion groups. The remaining evenings will be left open for recreation and rest. The last day will be entirely dedicated to individual presentations of a text or an idea. We conclude the residency with a celebratory dinner before departing from the island the following day.

The Swedish visual artist, writer and art historian Anna Ekros (born 1988) lives and works in Stockholm. She holds an MA in Critical Theory and the Arts from School of Visual Arts in New York and an MFA in Advanced Photographic Practices from The International Center of Photography in New York. In 2018 she enrolled to the Department of Culture and Aesthetics at Stockholm University, where she is currently studying.
